Creative Life in the Gateway Arts District

Art Lives Here Incubator Takes Root in the Gateway Arts District

RFP issued for Creative Industry Entrepreneurs In the Region

Mount Rainier, MD –Today, Art Lives Here launched phase 3 of the initiative by issuing a request for proposal to recruit small businesses from throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Targeting entrepreneurs in the communications field, (marketing, graphic and 3D design, film and digital media and other creative industries) project organizers aim to create a communications hub that will support current resident businesses as well as those expected in the Gateway Arts District’s new wave of development. The incubator will be located at 3311 Rhode Island Avenue in Mount Rainier, MD and is a part of the Gateway Community Development Corporation’s economic development programming.

Art Lives Here began in 2011 as a placemaking and visibility campaign. Fueled by local artists, the project used pop-up and temporary in-fill strategies to support underperforming locations in the neighborhood. Phase 3 will create a permanent home for some of the region’s most innovative entrepreneurs. “Our goal is to trigger a street-level transformation while directly supporting creative enterprises and to foster a business-friendly climate throughout the arts district,” says project director, Anne L’Ecuyer.

“Prince George’s County is quickly becoming a magnet to the most creative artists in the National Capital Region, throughout the State of Maryland, and amongst the national and international arts communities.  With the opening of this incubator, the County is offering more incredible opportunities for a greater diversity of artists to not only create amazing work, but viable careers and growth of cutting edge, creative enterprises,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III.

A committee of regional arts, government and business leaders will advise in the selection process. The first review of applications will begin on August 7, 2015, with selected businesses moving in as early as September 1, 2015. The program, which will include reduced rents, technical training and support, one-on-one counseling and marketing support, will continue through the end of 2016. The estimated value of the packages for each business is $15,000.

The project is funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) with additional funding from the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County. Other partners include the City of Mount Rainier, ArtSpace USA, Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council, Joe’s Movement Emporium, and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
