Creative Life in the Gateway Arts District
Welcome to the new Art Lives Here blog series, “A Day in the Life of a Gateway Artist”.
Princess Best and Valeka Holt, two performing artists who have worked closely with Art Lives Here, have collected a series of interview profiling an intimate look into what life is like as an artist here in the Gateway Arts District. They’ve talked to mothers, fathers, performing and visual artists, artists who live here, artists who have studios here, artists who exhibit here. Art Lives Here exists to connect artists to each other and to the public. This series is just another way we can introduce you to the incredible people you may or may not have known are living and creating in this community.
I thought “A Day in the Life of The Gateway Artist was an important topic, because people often have no idea how an “artist family” exists. Artists are often subtly dissuaded from having families or delaying them in order to pursue their artistic goals. There is this haze or fog over if you get married or have children, that somehow your dreams of becoming a truly fulfilled artist are put on a halt, so many don’t think of how super beneficial it could be. We wanted to show how everyday people are living, breathing and existing as artists everyday and their process of family, financial wealth, freedom to create and more. But not in this superficial way, in a tangible way that gives people a real sense of things they can do to make the artist life and artist family experience a more enjoyable and tangible one overall. There are often diamonds in our own backyard whom we never even know. This is a way to illuminate them and all the AMAZING things that they are doing, as a way to say WE are the ones who really have the power to influence others to know about the art that exists in our district. -Princess Best
The profiles will come out every Friday on the Art Lives Here blog and give you, our faithful readers, a personal look into an artist’s life as well as an opportunity to connect with them. If you are a Gateway Arts District artist and interested in being profiled as a part of this series, please contact Princess Best as firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to hearing from you and sharing with you the rich variety of creative individuals that make up the Gateway Arts District.
