ART LIVES HERE

Creative Life in the Gateway Arts District

A Spotlight On Art Works Studio School

By Barbara Johnson, part of MyGatewayArts.org’s Gateway on Foot series:

Art works in so many ways to make our lives better
Recently I took my 9-year-old niece Isabella to the Hirshhorn Museum on the National Mall. As we walked through the sculpture garden, Isabella asked, “How do these sculptures get chosen to be here? Can anyone put a sculpture here?”

Wouldn’t that be great? Wouldn’t it be cool if there were a museum where regular people could install their artwork?

art matters, the gallery project of Art Works Studio School, is not quite a museum, but we do exhibit the work of our community members. art matters was created to provide a place for everyone in our Gateway community to see high quality art, show their own artwork, and become part of a larger creative community.

We chose Art Works as our name because we believe it. When we say art works we aren’t talking about the artworks we exhibit. We’re talking about how art works in so many ways to make our lives better.

Before you say, “Oh, but I’m not an artist, so art doesn’t work for me!” consider this… Think about doodling while you’re on the phone, looking at really cool photographs online, the way you decorate your home, or maybe that scarf you knitted. All of these things spring from the same creative spirit, a spirit many of us have lost touch with as we’ve focused on our practical everyday lives.

Art is so much more than paintings and sculptures in museums. Yes, artists create art, but all of us have access to the same kind of creativity that artists work with everyday. So why not explore yours? Take a class, drop in for an Open Studio workshop, or join us for a gallery reception?

Art Works offers classes and workshops for adults, toddlers, teens, and children of all ages. Check us out at www.artworksnow.org and join us Saturday, September 15, from 2 – 5pm for our Fall Open House and Paint Splatter pARTy!

This article was written for MyGatewayArts.org’s Gateway on Foot series, a user-submitted portal that allows community members an opportunity to share experiences with one another of happenings in the Gateway Arts District. The series offers an online cross-platform blog-review component, as well as prospective walking tours.
